External rendering
An external render is, in its most basic form, a coating applied to the walls of a building, to provide a protective coating which would prevent rain penetration. It also acts as a decorative finish to enhance the appearance of a building.
Internal rendering
Internal rendering as opposed to external rendering simply means that you are covering brick or stone of walls that will be inside a property as opposed to walls that have to deal with the outside elements (think rain, wind, sunlight and possibly fire).
Plastering
Plastering is the quickest and most popular method used to cover existing artex finishes and uneven walls and ceilings.
Dot and dab (dry lining)
Plasterboard is one of the great versatile materials in modern construction. Made from the simple materials of gypsum and paper it is used in most building types in a wide range of applications including wall lining, partitions, sound control and fire protection.
Dot & Dab is the name given to the process of fixing plasterboard to a solid wall by way of plaster board adhesive. Dot & Dab or dry lining as it is also called has become the construction industry and building controllers preferred method of lining wall prior to finish skim.
Skim plastering to plasterboard is a popular method of providing a smooth, seamless surface ready to receive decorative treatment. Skim plastering gives many of the advantages of a traditional solid plaster finish such as robustness, acoustic enhancement and a quick turnaround on site.
Stud walls
A stud wall comprises a frame of timber or metalstuds secured to the floor, ceiling and walls, which is then covered with plasterboard. When you’ve decorated your new wall, it’ll look like an integral part of your house.
